Visiting Vannes
A visit to the medieval town of Vannes, capital of
Morbihan is well worthwhile. There is an outdoor market every Wednesday
and Saturday
mornings together with the indoor ‘Halles de Lices’ selling
locally produced meats, fruit and vegetables, Mexican, Chinese and
Italian foods and spices etc and an indoor fish market. Outside,
the market has wonderful displays of fruit, flowers and vegetables,
artisan breads and cheeses, pottery, clothing, leather goods and
gifts to name but a few.
The town itself is very interesting. Walk through the Porte St-Vincent
gateway and along the narrow streets with their shops, cafés
and restaurants.. In this same area the wooden colombage houses remain
well preserved, and below the St Pierre Cathedral, the ramparts overlook
the delightfully laid out gardens.
In the region of the Port there are many seafood restaurants – a
speciality of Brittany. A little further along is the home of the
Aquarium and you can organise boat trips around the islands from
nearby too.
Beach days
For rocky inlets and little beaches visit Sazeau on the
southern side of the Golfe. Further around the coast is Arzon, Port
Navalo
and Port du Crouesty, a haven of boating activities and with many
sea-food restaurants. There are long, sandy beaches with water-sports
facilities
In the opposite direction on the far side of Vannes to the north
of the Golfe is Carnac with its beautiful white sand beaches, safe
swimming, water-sports and coastal paths. Carnac is also home to
some very important megalithic sites.
Château de Josselin
The Château sits high above the banks of the Nantes-Brest
Canal/River Oust and during the summer there are guided tours of
the ground floor and entrance to the gardens which are very pretty.
Right next to the Château is the Tourist Office and a walk
around the corner will bring you out into the square where there
are cafés and restaurants. A short walk down the hill brings
you to the river where, in fine weather you can enjoy lunch on the
terrace of one of a couple of the restaurants there.
Château de Kerguéhennec
Designed in 1872, the very impressive
parkland has two lakes, wooded walks and an arboretum. The grounds
are open all year round and the
Château is open from mid June to mid September.
Le Chateau de Suscinio
Today the Château is home to art exhibitions and is open all
year round. Mainly 14th century, and once the home of the Duke of
Brittany, the Château boasts a moat, Great Hall and rounded
towers.
Petites Cités deCaractère
When you see the see the gold
lettered black iron sign for a Petite Cité de Caractère
you know you are in for an architectural treat. To become a member
of the association, these small towns must
have retained their ancient architecture, have restaurants or cafés
serving regional dishes and for visitors to be able to see local
attractions etc. Some, like Rochefort-en-Terre, are very pretty indeed
with lovely floral displays throughout the summer. Close by are Malestroit,
Lizio, Rochefort-en-Terre, La Roche Bernard and Josselin.
Auray & Saint-Goustan
Auray, on the northern bank of the River
Auray, is a charming medium sized town with all amenities It is connected
by a stone bridge to
the Port of Saint-Goustan with its delightful 15th and 16th century
timbered houses, narrow hilly streets and abundance of restaurants.
During the summer there are stalls along the quay selling all sorts
of art – pictures, pottery, glass, jewellery and such. After
a good lunch, it’s nice to walk along the quay, look at what
you might buy and see the boats moored there.
Sporting Activities
Bird-watching, fishing, sailing, kayaking, wind-surfing,
swimming, coastal walks, cycling, parachuting, inland walks and
horse-riding
are all easily accessible.
Painting
There are many places to paint for artists with varying
interests; coastal, architectural, rural, flora and fauna. If you
are an experienced
artist or have a teacher in your group, we can point you in the right
direction and provide picnic lunches if required.

the week.
Out of town shopping – Ikea at Nantes is 1 hour 15 minutes
by car, Several hyper-markets, Garden Centres
